CORBAN WALKER AT RHA, DUBLIN

This exhibition entitled ‘Please Adjust’ features two works by Walker from the Irish Pavilion at the 2011 Venice Art Biennale re-imagined for the Atrium Space at the RHA.

The vinyl drawing, on the window of the RHA Atrium, involves Walker's response to his experience of the built environment and also plays with mathematical rules and principles, both common themes in his work. It is a visual game of sorts whereby the artist begins with a black vinyl square of 60mm and projects this square, successively reducing it by half its own dimension until it becomes almost invisible, hence the title Transparent Wall. Please Adjust, the largest work, comprises 176 interlocking stainless steel cube frames. As the title suggests the configuration which is subject to alteration at each installation questions the notion of sculpture as a constant stable form. The title also references the enormous economic crisis that has affected nearly every country since 2008, Ireland in particular, and how we as individuals may have to adjust expectations and positions. Just as each unit in this sculpture depends on the other for stability, individuals are all subject to the consequences of one action against another and exterior forces beyond our control. Corban Walker (b. 1967, Dublin, Ireland) is an artist known for his investigations of perceptions of scale and architectural constructs.

This exhibition runs until 29th April 2012 and will then tour to Lismore Castle Arts, Co Waterford from June to August 2012.

Pilchuck offers internships that are ideal for emerging and experienced artists who wish to further develop their professional and technical expertise. Pilchuck will provide a small stipend, housing, meals, some studio access, and the opportunity to occasionally sit in on lectures, demonstrations, and participate in special events. By design, the educational program at Pilchuck varies from session to session; each new combination of classes, instructors, assistants, and students creates a unique rhythm and energy. RESIDENCIES AT CILL RIALAIG, KERRY

The Cill Rialaig Project in southwest Kerry invites applications for residencies for September 2012 to December 2013. Built out of the ruins of a 1790s pre-famine village atop a cliff face overlooking the Atlantic, Cill Rialaig offers professional artists, writers and other creative professionals an opportunity to get away from everyday career pressures and the demands of 21st century life in order to focus entirely on their artistic practice. While residents are primarily visual artists, they also include photographers, writers, poets, screenwriters, applied artists, musicians and composers, architects, and their peers, from Ireland and abroad.

Cill Rialaig is located in a remote Gaeltacht, or Irish-speaking area. Its cottages are living-work spaces that provide for residents' essential work and living needs. They are very simple without modern accoutrements of television, telephones or internet. The remote location means that there are very few distractions other than the landscape; it is a true retreat.

Residencies are offered free of charge, although there is a small service fee for utilities. Residents provide their own transportation, food and supplies.

The next deadline for applications is 15th March 2012. The following deadline is September 2012.

THE ARTHOUSE STUDIO AWARD FOR NATIONAL COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN GRADUATES

Applications are now invited for the Arthouse Studio Award for NCAD graduates. For a second year running Laois County Council in association with the National College of Art and Design are offering this award. It is intended to support an emerging artist/designer to develop their professional practice whilst engaging in a residency project and community context. Applicants must have graduated in the past 3 years from the NCAD. The successful applicant is expected to take up this award at the beginning of April 2012.

The Award offers a bursary of €10,000 towards the residency, reduced rent for studio/ accommodation, curatorial support, exhibition opportunities and lecturing opportunities. Services offered within the complex include a studio space, kiln, exhibition space, rehearsal space, garden space, a digital room, and library facilities.

RAKOW GRANT FOR GLASS RESEARCH, CORNING MUSEUM OF GLASS

The purpose of the Rakow Grant for Glass Research is to foster scholarly research in the history of glass and the history of glassmaking. Grants may be used to cover travel, living expenses or other expenditures necessary to conduct the research or to publish it. Awards will be based on the merit of the projects proposed, the nature and extent of the contributions to glass studies, and an evaluation of the ability of the applicant to accomplish the goals as stated. Applications will be considered only if typed in English on the prescribed form.

Applications, which are reviewed by a Museum staff committee, must be received before 1st February 2012 of the year for which funding is requested. The judges are looking for a project which will lead to a finished product within the funding limits and whose research will bring the recipient to Corning. Notification of the committee's decision will be sent by 1st April 2012. Successful applicants will normally receive all of the approved funds at the beginning of the project. In the event that full funding of a project cannot be given, the applicant will be contacted immediately to determine if the project can be modified.

ZWIESEL GLASS DAYS 2012 EXHIBITION, GERMANY – CALL FOR ENTRIES

As part of the Zwiesel Glass Days 2012 the town of Zwiesel and the glass working-group would like to invite you to participate from 11th August until 3th October 2012 in the International Art-Glass Exhibition.

Participation in the Art-Glass Exhibition is free, apart from if you sell an exhibit, when we will take the standard 30% commission and as your exhibits will be insured (only during the exhibition, not when despatched) 15 € (incl. tax) per participant is required to cover insurance and advertising costs. We are unable to cover your transport costs. Items which were shown in other exhibitions in Zwiesel may not be submitted.

Please let us know if you are interested in participating and what items you would like to submit by completing the registration form. As only a limited amount of exhibition space is available, please send photos of your submissions with the registration form. If the number of registrations is too great to be accommodated in the exhibition space, an expert jury will select the items to be exhibited. Photos submitted free-of-charge by the artists may be used for advertising purposes in any way the organisers wish. By registering to take part artists confirm they hold the public rights to the photos.

PROPOSALS FOR ARTWORK SOUGHT FROM THE DIOCESE OF CORK AND ROSS

The Diocese of Cork and Ross, as Co-Trustee of a new Community College in Cork wishes to commission a piece of art that would reflect this new Community College and would also reflect, in a discreet way, the role of the Diocese as Co-Trustee. The identified location is an internal wall that spans the second and third floors. The wall is clearly visible from the College Hall, as the Hall extends to the roof, the external wall to the left is of glass. The area available is approximately nine feet by 11 feet. The Commissioned piece may be in whatever format, in whatever medium and may be in a number of pieces as opposed to one piece.

The Budget available is between €5,000 and €7,000. The College will be officially opened by the Minister for State at the Department of Education and Skills on March 30th. While a completion date in time for the opening would be an advantage, it can be later.

KITH AND KIN: NEW GLASS AND CERAMICS SYMPOSIUM, SUNDERLAND

A glass and ceramics symposium featuring presentations from artists exhibiting in Kith and Kin: New Glass and Ceramics (Andrew Livingstone, Colin Rennie, June Kingsbury, Chris McHugh, Erin Dickson and Jeffrey Sarmiento), and two artists; Charlotte Hodes and Prof. Paul Coldwell, whose practice similarly address conceptual approaches in the realisation of ideas and decorative concerns. The symposium will conclude with a European design case study by Dr Jack Dawson.

The symposium will provide a context for, and investigation into how the rich traditions of glass and ceramics in the North East of England and beyond, are being innovatively explored and developed through a range of contemporary practice, diverse content, cross-over of technique and media, and by practice-led research.

STICKY FINGERS ARTS SEEKING CRAFT ARTISTS FOR CHILDREN’S PUBLIC ART PROJECTS

In association with Newry and Mourne District Council, Sticky Fingers Early Years Arts is looking for four artists of differing disciplines to collaborate with primary school children on an integrated public art scheme for Hill Street, Newry. Each artist will deliver a series of workshops in Newry to work with local children on creating a permanent art installation in one of four sites along Hill Street. In keeping with Sticky Fingers' programme ethos, the workshops will be child-centered, with the themes of the final work arising from the children's imagination. Each art installation will be finished to a high quality and should combine the children's work with that of the artist. It is envisaged that the workshop time spent with the children will be used as a research period for each artist to create their element of the final work, both elements working in tandem with one another.

Applicants will need to be available during February, March and April 2012, have proven experience in producing mid to large-scale public art projects and have an interest in working creatively and collaboratively with young children. The deadline for all applications is 10am January 16th 2012. Late submissions will not be considered.

PILCHUCK TEACHING ASSISTANTS AND ARTIST ASSISTANT APPLICATIONS

Teaching Assistants (TA) and Artist Assistants (AA) participate in a leadership capacity during the summer program. All assistants must have extensive studio experience and an interest in collaboration. Successful candidates would have great project planning and time management skills, be proactive, and enjoy problem solving.

TAs develop their own teaching abilities by working with students and supporting the instructional and creative efforts of an instructor. Previous TA experience at Pilchuck is helpful but not necessary. AAs assist artists in residence by facilitating their use of studios and helping to solve technical and creative problems. They gain valuable insight into professional art practices through working with accomplished artists. AAs must have previously attended Pilchuck in some capacity and should possess a broad range of glassworking skills.

TAs and AAs receive housing and meals, a $50 store credit for supplies, studio access, and partial reimbursement for travel costs. The deadline for applications is 13th February 2012.

IRISH CRAFT PORTFOLIO 2012

The Crafts Council of Ireland is changing the Irish Craft Portfolio programme from a 1-year to a 2-year cycle. This is being done to align better with makers' needs following a review of the programme including feedback from makers and to create more efficiency in CCoI's market development activities.

The new book, Irish Craft Portfolio will be now published in Autumn 2012. The next book will be published in Autumn 2014. Irish Craft Portfolio was established in 2005 by the Crafts Council of Ireland to promote the work of individuals showing excellence in craftsmanship at an international level. It has been used as a resource for Irish and International curators in accessing the work of Irish makers for exhibition. It is increasingly used by private and state collectors to guide their collecting of contemporary Irish craft.

Makers who did not already apply in September 2011 for the new programme can do so now. Closing date for new applications is Wednesday 18th January 2012 by 5pm.

IRISH CRAFT BURSARY AWARD 2012

The CCoI Irish Craft Bursary is awarded to professional craftspeople in order to support the creative development of their craft and to enable new opportunities in their practice. The Irish Craft Bursary was launched in 2005 with the objective of providing an opportunity to assist makers to develop a body of work that they would otherwise not have had the time or resources to develop. Irish Craft Bursary offers a prize fund of €10,000 awarded to support a commitment to producing craftwork that illustrates the attainment of the highest level of technical and design skill. For 2012, the Crafts Council of Ireland will award three bursaries between €2,500 - €4,000. The amounts awarded will depend on the scope of the top three proposals and the panel’s decision as to how the fund should be divided.

NCAD GALLERY CALL FOR EXHIBITION PROPOSALS FROM NCAD GRADUATES 2009 - 2011

The committee of the NCAD Gallery invites exhibition proposals from NCAD alumni of all faculties, who graduated in the years 2009, 2010 & 2011. The written exhibition proposal should detail plans for an exhibition/ installation, to take place at the NCAD Gallery in June 2012.

Proposals will be accepted from individual artists/makers, curators, writers or those wishing to organise a group exhibition. In the case of group or curated exhibitions, the curator/ organiser and all proposed artists must have graduated from NCAD within the designated time frame 2009, 2010 or 2011.

All proposals must be accompanied by a CV and relevant visual support material including digital or printed photographs and should indicate clearly the nature of the work[s] and a rationale for showing in the context of NCAD Gallery.

THE ALBERT BENDER COLLECTION OF ASIAN ART IN THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF IRELAND – BOOK LAUNCHED, NATIONAL MUSEUM

Dr. Patrick Wallace, Director of the National Museum of Ireland, recently launched a new book titled ‘The Albert Bender Collection of Asian Art in the National Museum of Ireland’. The purpose of this publication, written by Dr. Audrey Whitty, Curator - Ceramics, Glass and Asian Collections, is to bring the collection, which has been on exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland, Collins Barracks, Dublin, since 2008, to the widest possible audience.

Between 1931 and 1936 Albert Bender donated approximately 260 artefacts of East Asian origin to the National Museum of Ireland. The works, mostly of Chinese, Japanese and Tibetan Buddhist art, are one of the most significant gifts ever received by an Irish cultural institution and are of the highest importance within the National Museum’s overall holdings of Asian material.

XIAOWEI ZHUANG EXHIBITION; POETICS OF THE HANDMADE, DUBLIN

The National College of Art and Design Gallery, Dublin presents the work of Xiaowei Zhuang, Professor of Glass at the University of Shanghai, as part of a touring exhibition from the CIT/Crawford College of Art, Cork. Professor Zhuang was appointed Director of the Glass Museum of Shanghai in 2008. He is a member of the International Committee for Museums and Collections of Glass of the International Council of Museums and will also open a new Glass Museum in Shanghai next year.

Poetics of the Handmade at the NCAD Gallery is part of a touring exhibition from the CIT/Crawford College of Art, Cork. The exhibition is an opportunity for a Dublin audience to see outstanding and inventive sculptural work in glass by a lead practitioner and to experience a different sensibility at work. 21st CENTURY ICONS EXHIBITION NOW SHOWING IN DUBLIN

The function of jewellery has always been to convey status. This was particularly true of the torc, whose ostentatious size and weight could communicate the force and power of the wearer. But in contemporary usage, the torc has become an object of kitsch, often geared towards the tourist. But if we were to design neckpieces now that conveyed something about us - as Irish - to the world, what would they say? In 21st Century Icons, some of Ireland's most exciting contemporary jewellers re-interpret the iconic forms of Celtic neckpieces, torcs and lunulas for the 21st century.

Emma Bourke and Róisín de Buitléar are among the exhibitors in 21st Century Icons. The exhibition was curated by Ann Mulrooney and after its success at the National Craft Gallery in Kilkenny, is now showing at Rathfarnham Castle, Rathfarnham Road, Dublin 14. SCULPTURE BIENNALE 2012, THE KING'S GARDEN, COPENHAGEN

For more than forty years, a large sculpture exhibition has been held in the King`s Gardens in downtown Copenhagen where Rosenborg Castle is situated. The garden is Copenhagen's most used park and is visited annually by over three million people. The exhibition will take place between 25th August 2012 and 21st October 2012.

The exhibition is free to participate in and each artist may exhibit up to two sculptures. Each sculpture must be able to stand in a public space. Each artist must pay their own transportation costs (www.DSV.com is recommended for transport enquiries. The Danish Sculptor Society aim to raise funds with participating artists for the transportation of pieces to the exhibition). The sculptures are not insured by the Danish Sculptor Society; participating artists must have liability insurance. The Danish Sculptor Society will publish an exhibition newspaper, provides PR, guided tours and events in conjunction with the exhibition.

THE ARTHOUSE STUDIO AWARD FOR NATIONAL COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN GRADUATES

Applications are now invited for the Arthouse Studio Award for NCAD graduates. For a second year running Laois County Council in association with the National College of Art and Design are offering this award. It is intended to support an emerging artist/designer to develop their professional practice whilst engaging in a residency project and community context. Applicants must have graduated in the past three years from the NCAD. The successful applicant is expected to take up this award at the beginning of April 2012.

The Award offers a bursary of €10,000 towards the residency, reduced rent for studio/ accommodation, curatorial support, exhibition opportunities and lecturing opportunities. This two day course will introduce the potential of molten glass as a creative material through the process of hot casting into sand moulds. Participants will have the opportunity to ladle glass straight from the furnace and pour right into prepared ‘open faced’ sand moulds using found and sculpted objects. This is the most direct method to create your own solid sculptural forms in glass. All materials are provided, but feel free to bring in your own objects to press in the sand. Appropriate footwear is a must: leather boots are preferred, leather shoes acceptable; no open-toed shoes or sandals!

In the first in a series of two-day 'mini masterclasses', glass artist Alison Lowry will show participants how to create vessels using pate de verre (glass paste). MFA GLASS PROGRAMME SOUTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY CARBONDALE – CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

The MFA program in Glass at Southern Illinois University is a three year programme and offers graduate assistantships with full tuition waiver and monthly stipend. The School of Art and Design at SIU Carbondale includes a 4,000-square-foot Surplus Gallery, facilities in glass, ceramics, blacksmithing, small metals, foundry, sculpture, and 2D areas including printmaking, as well as up-to-date digital imaging equipment. Graduate students have private studio space, 24-hour access to studio facilities, and exposure to a variety of art, design, and art history courses as well as visiting artist lectures and workshops. With over 50 graduate students in the School of Art and Design, SIU offers a strong sense of community for entering MFA students.

The Glass program at SIU has a fully equipped hotshop and coldshop, numerous kilns of varying sizes, as well as a moldmaking area, critique space, and a mobile glass studio. Students also have access to photo equipment for documentation of work. Strong applicants to the MFA program in glass should be pursuing research in glass and developing their career toward being professional artists. The Glass program is seeking graduate assistants who have experiences as glass studio technician
and/or teaching beginning level glass survey classes. A variety of graduate assistantships are available throughout the art and design
areas. All Graduate assistantships have full tuition waiver and monthly
stipend. Travel funds and scholarships are also available for the graduate
students to attend conferences and participate in exhibitions.

DR. JUDITH SCHWARTZ LECTURES, NATIONAL COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN

Dr. Judith S. Schwartz currently directs the Sculpture in Craft Media area at New York University’s Department of Art and Art Professions. On Tuesday 18th October she will present lectures at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. Topics which she will address on the day include: Confrontational Ceramics, How the Galleries Function for Crafts NYC and Globally, Guiding a Global Career. Other speakers on the day include Michael Moore (University of Ulster), Henry Pim (NCAD) and Colleen Dube (Fulbright Program).

Glassblowing for Beginners Workshop

In this two-day workshop you will explore the extraordinary medium of hot glass. You will learn how to gather glass out of the furnace, to control and shape the hot glass, to blow a bubble and make a simple vessel. Working in two small teams, the emphasis of this course is hands-on experience, with demos and support from an experienced glassblower. Louise Rice is based at the Sculpture Centre in Manorhamilton and studied glass at Edinburgh College of Art and the Rietveld Acadamie in Amsterdam.

Advanced Refractory Mouldmaking for Kiln Cast Glass & Bronze Casting Workshop
Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd October 2011

This workshop will cover how to make a successful investment type refractory mould for casting Bronze or Glass. You come with a vision, a wax and a will to work, and you’ll leave with a mould ready to “burn out” and pour in the next bronze workshop. Mould construction, “Gating & venting”, investment refractories, and ceramic based mould materials will be discussed with an aim towards enabling participants to “customise” their approach to fit their vision. Both poured “block” moulds and Roman/Italian “hand built” moulds will be demonstrated.

Bronze Casting Using Solid Investment Workshop
Thursday 3rd - Sunday 6th November 2011
Trainer: Tim Morris. Course Fees: €370 (four days) -10am to 5pm
Participants: 8. Experience: No experience required

Participants will make a piece of sculpture working directly with wax, vent and sprew, make an investment mould and cast their own piece on the final day to make a finished bronze. On this course, you will get to make probably two moulds, depending upon their size and complexity. One of which you will have time to melt out and pour in the bronze. Generally, a beginner will come away with a minimum of one rough bronze (for example a 6" statue or axe head). You may not have time to file and clean it, but this can be done in your own time. Finished bronzes can then be patinated on the Patination Workshop. Extra moulds can be poured at another time. Your work will be weighed on the last day and anything over 10lbs will be charged at €5 / lb. For example, two 6" statues will generally be less than 10lbs, so for most people, no extra payment will be necessary.
